The Town of Athens is located at the eastern end of Greene County, and was established on February 25th, 1815. Portions of the Towns of Catskill and Coxsackie were used to form the Town of Athens. The town has since developed a rich heritage with diverse architecture spanning over three centuries.
After the bridge went up in 1935, the need for the ferry was eliminated and it closed in 1947. Athens’ layout and architecture have remained essentially the same since its heyday in the late 19th century. It has more than 300 buildings on national and state historic registers and has the feel of a living museum of American architecture, with examples of many of the predominant styles of the 18th and 19th centuries, including Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Stick, Second Empire, Folk Victorian and Queen Anne.

TIRES, HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE, CONSTRUCTION/DEMOLITION DEBRIS, HAZARDOUS MATERIALS (CHEMICALS, PAINT, PESTICIDES, LIQUIDS), COMMERCIAL WASTE HAULERS
The Crew will remove all items from your vehicle(s).
NOTE: Commercial Waste will be re-directed to the County Transfer Facility on Route 385-Catskill (a Fee will be charged)

2025 Trooper David Brinkerhoff Memorial Race
CBRC and ECCC present the 2025 Trooper David Brinkerhoff Memorial/ Army Cycling Classic Road Race. The Race is dedicated to the memory of NYS Trooper David Brinkerhoff who was killed in the line of duty on April 25, 2007.
The Capital Bicycle Racing Club (CBRC) plans to hold its 2025 Trooper David Brinkerhoff Memorial Race in the Village of Athens, the Town of Athens, the Village of Coxsackie and the Town of Coxsackie on April 12. This year there will be only one day of races. In 2024 the event organizers donated over $4,000 to charities in the host communities.
